Addiction Recovery Therapy

You are struggling to cope with addictive behaviors in your life. Your addiction consumes all your time, attention, and money. It has become the only way you know how to manage your emotions, fill the void, and function in your roles and responsibilities. But it is no longer helping and instead, is creating chaos in your relationships that matters most. And you don’t want to get to a point where you will lose it all.

Addiction has changed your relationships with yourself and others. The lies and isolation have damaged your life. Maybe you don’t feel like you know who you are anymore or you feel ashamed and embarrassed for the wrong choices you have made. And maybe you have neglected your hobbies, interests, and self-care activities.

This has been going on for a while now and you are afraid you’re never going to get control. A lot of the time you feel defeated. You’re not sure what your next steps are, but sometimes it seems like you’re broken. And you know if you don’t address it, it can only get worse.

Recovery Is Journey

Whether you have tried to get sober many times or this is your first attempt in recovery, you are capable of breaking free from addiction. Your past treatment attempts are not a failure just because you relapsed. Each time you seek recovery, you discover another piece of information. In every relapse, there is a lesson to be learned. As you put the pieces together, you will build a strong and stable foundation for long-lasting recovery. There is no need to compare your journey to anyone else’s. Recovery can look different for everyone.

In substance abuse counseling, you can learn how to overcome your addiction. And you can learn to cope with the underlying emotional pain that keeps taking you back to your addiction. The goal of substance abuse counseling is to thrive in recovery and start living your ideal life.

How Does Substance Abuse Counseling In Los Angeles, Ca Help?

Counseling for substance abuse is the right fit for you if you want to stop using and learn to live up to your truest and fullest potential. You may be a good fit if you want to live a life free from guilt and shame from past mistakes.

Recovery is more than just stopping the addictive behavior. It’s about creating a new chapter in your life. It’s about changing behaviors, situations, and relationships that have enabled your addictive behavior. If the necessary changes are not made, you will find yourself back in your old habits.

In substance abuse counseling, we will explore together the parts of your life that have to change in order to increase the chances of your recovery being successful. It does not mean everything has to change, but you will have to be honest and accountable about risk factors.

Therapy at our Los Angeles, CA counseling center is the place to change your patterns and strengthen your self-confidence. Together, we will work on helping you break free from the vicious cycle of addiction, and instead build an honest and stable life for yourself.

The goal of substance abuse counseling is to learn how to navigate your feelings and thoughts when things are stressful so that you have more tools in your toolbox. You will learn to have your needs met in healthier ways so that you don’t rely on destructive choices. Your addictive behavior has likely caused you to lie to many people, including yourself. Recovery is about living an authentic life where you show up as your true self.

Signs You May Benefit From Substance Abuse Counseling

  • Difficulty and/or inability to stop the use or behavior
  • Loss of control over the amount and frequency of use or behavior
  • Craving and compulsive using
  • Continued use in the face of adverse consequences, such as conflict with loved ones, loss of job, health problems, and/or legal complications

The Substance Abuse Counseling Process

You will work together with a substance abuse counselor to understand the progression of your addiction as well as the underlying unresolved issues or untreated symptoms. Typically, addiction is an attempt to solve a deeper problem. You will repair and strengthen the foundational issues so that your recovery is on solid ground.

We will also work on the relationship you have with yourself and others. This means learning to love yourself for who you are and where you are in life. In your recovery, you will learn to seek validation internally instead of looking externally. This will give you a true sense of trust in yourself, helping you live an authentic life.

Further, addiction and relationship issues go hand in hand. Regardless of whichever came first, you will learn to have relationships with others that are safe, predictable, and reliable.  In recovery, you will learn to break free from codependency by engaging in healthy boundaries and dealing with conflict assertively.

What You Can Expect From Substance Abuse Counseling

At our Los Angeles, CA-based counseling practice, the treatment process starts with a free 20-minute consultation. During this consultation, you will have the opportunity to elaborate on your current circumstances that have brought you to seek out therapy. Our client care coordinator will answer all of your questions about our approach to treating addiction as well as the cost.

In the first 2 to 3 sessions, you will go through the intake process. During this, a substance abuse counselor will gather all the information they need to create a strong treatment plan for you. After the first session, you will fill out a few forms to better evaluate the severity of your presenting problems. This comprehensive intake process will help us identify your specific triggers, get a clear picture of your addiction, and identify other components that may influence treatment outcomes. The intake process is necessary to create an individualized treatment plan that will be successful in helping you overcome your addiction.

Our Approach To Substance Abuse Counseling In Los Angeles, CA

On-going sessions are designed to redefine your life in recovery. The goal of counseling is not to remove or cure addiction, but to give you the tools and insight that will help you live a fulfilling life in recovery. In substance abuse counseling, our therapists utilize Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). These are both evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders. Each of these modalities has unique qualities and focuses that complement each other for an effective outcome.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The fundamental principle of CBT proposes that our thoughts affect our emotions, which affect our behaviors. Using CBT, you will learn to uncover underlying thoughts, attitudes, and belief systems you may have that are unhealthy, negative, or rigid. Once we identify these unhealthy thought patterns, our goal is to find ways to challenge and reframe them.  We will also explore behavioral changes to support your new way of thinking and at times use these action goals to challenge your thoughts.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

The focus of MI is to resolve the ambivalent feelings you may have about recovery and build an internal motivation to make changes. By removing barriers to your goals, you will have the clarity and motivation to make the necessary changes and move towards your ideal life. The goal of MI is to give you a sense of strength and confidence to reach for your goals and let go of any doubt, anger, or ambivalence.

While you will never stop being in recovery, after some time and significant improvement, you and your substance abuse counselor will review your treatment process and discuss ending therapy. We will create a termination plan to ensure that you have a solid idea of how to maintain your new behaviors and changes while maintaining a strong support system to rely on.
